Dental Bridges
Teeth are made to work together to help you chew, speak, and smile. When you lose a tooth, the nearby teeth will likely begin to tilt and the opposing teeth will begin to drift. A missing tooth in the lower jaw may cause a tooth in your upper jaw to shift down into that space, meaning your teeth will no longer be even or in a straight line. This can affect your bite and place more stress on your teeth and jaw joints, possibly causing pain and damage. You may also end up losing more teeth as a result.
Another thing that occurs following the result of a tooth extraction is bone loss. Calcium is laid down in response to pressure. Without the tooth in place, the body loses the signal to keep bone supporting the area where the tooth was. To combat this, we recommend placing a bone graft in the area.
To replace the missing tooth and avoid many complications that arise following a missing tooth, there are two permanent options – an implant or a bridge.
A dental bridge is a custom-made replacement tooth or teeth that fill the space where one or more teeth are missing. It requires crowning the adjacent teeth and joining them to replace the missing tooth and bridging the gap. The bridge permanently restores your bite and helps prevent neighboring teeth from shifting.
